Murraya koenigii is native to the eastern and southern parts of India but is also cultivated across Southeast Asia, the United States, and Australia. It is a semi-deciduous, aromatic shrub or small tree with a strong, woody, dark green to brownish stem. They also contain oxalic acid, crystalline glycosides, carbazole alkaloids, resin, and koenigin. Key phytoconstituents include girinimbin, koenimbine, koenigine, and koenidine, along with coumarins and triterpenoid alkaloids like cyclomahanimbine. The essential oil in fresh leaves contains D-sabinene, D-α-terpinol, α-pinene, caryophyllene, and dipentene, while the roots contain girinimbine and koenoline.
