Acorus calamus is a semiaquatic, perennial herb native to northern temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, North America, and Europe. The plant thrives in swampy or marshy environments, featuring long, slender, grass-like leaves that can grow up to 1.5 meters long.
The plant also produces a slightly curved spadix covered with small yellowish-green to brown flowers. Historically, calamus rhizomes have been used in incense and tea.
Calamus oil contains a variety of active compounds, including α-asarone, β-asarone, γ-asarone, calamene, calamenenol, calameone, α-pinene, β-pinene, camphene, p-cymene, eugenyl acetate, eugenol, isoeugenol, methyl isoeugenol, calamol, azulene, eugenol methyl ether, dipentene, methyleugenol, asaronaldehyde, terpinolene, 1,8-cineole, camphor, α-caryophyllene, and several hydrocarbons. The oil also contains fatty acids such as palmitic acid, heptylic acid, and butyric acid esters.
